Frequently Asked Questions
Does coffee sober you up?
No. Coffee contains caffeine, a stimulant that can make you feel more alert — but it has no effect on your actual BAC. Your liver metabolises alcohol at a fixed rate regardless of caffeine intake. Drinking coffee while drunk just creates an 'alert drunk' — someone who feels more awake but has the same impaired judgement and reaction time.
Does a cold shower lower your BAC?
No. Cold showers may feel refreshing and temporarily increase alertness, but they do not affect how quickly your liver processes alcohol. Your BAC will be the same before and after a shower.
How long does it take BAC to drop from 0.08% to 0.00%?
At an average metabolism rate of 0.015% per hour, it takes about 5.3 hours for your BAC to go from 0.08% to zero. However, this varies by person — factors like liver health, body weight, food intake, and genetics all influence metabolism rate.
Does exercise speed up alcohol metabolism?
Very slightly. Mild exercise (like a walk) marginally increases your metabolism rate and may help you feel better, but the effect on BAC is minimal. Vigorous exercise when intoxicated can actually be dangerous and is not recommended.
What is the only proven way to lower BAC?
Time. The liver metabolises alcohol at a fairly fixed rate of approximately 0.015% BAC per hour, regardless of what you eat, drink, or do. The only reliable way to lower your BAC is to stop drinking and wait.
